Step by step

  1. Test with a known-good original disc Burned and scratched discs confuse diagnosis.
  2. Listen and watch Does it spin, does the laser move, does the tray work? Different symptoms point to different faults.
  3. Clean the lens Isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab.
  4. Check mechanical parts Look for dry lubricant, a warped belt or a broken gear.
  5. Lubricate and replace belts Replace stiff belts and lightly lubricate.
  6. Look at the drive board Capacitors on the drive PCB are often the cause. hitmanmcc notes it is usually the caps, not the laser.
  7. Consider the motor Check whether the spindle motor spins and measure it if you can.
  8. Tune the laser pot last Mark the position, change in tiny steps and revert if you hear rubbing.
  9. Replace the laser If all else fails, replace it. Optical drive emulators are a common alternative.
