Swap or upgrade the original Xbox hard drive
The stock Xbox hard drive is locked to the console by a unique key. A swap means cloning the drive and locking the new one correctly.

Before you start
- Do not format or replace the drive before backing up the EEPROM.
- This is a software-and-hardware job. Follow a complete, current guide for your exact setup.

Step by step
- Work out whether your Xbox is modded Modded and stock consoles have different drive requirements.
- Back up the EEPROM Save the EEPROM.bin file for future reference. Without it you may not be able to unlock a replacement drive later.
- Back up the drive contents Copy everything from the old drive before touching it.
- Choose a replacement drive A PATA drive or a PATA adapter for modern storage.
- Clone and lock the drive Use a tool like Chimp to copy the data and lock the new drive with the console's unique key.
- Use a good IDE cable An 80-wire PATA cable gives better stability with newer drives.
- Boot and verify Boot the console and confirm the dashboard and saves are intact.
- Keep backups Store the EEPROM backup and drive image somewhere safe.

- Tip (Medium confidence). The 8GB stock drive is locked to each motherboard. An upgrade uses Chimp to copy the original and lock the new drive with the HDKey. Source
