Controller · Easy · about 20 minutes. Worth doing. Reports say this fix helps on many machines.
You are in the right place if: The character drifts when you let go of the stick, or the stick feels loose and cannot reach full range.
Before you start
- Aftermarket sticks can feel different. ConsoleMods notes at least one popular option has less smooth travel and a noticeable deadzone.
- Keep screws sorted. The controller uses more than one length.

Step by step
- Test the drift Check in a menu or a test screen to confirm the controller, not the game, is at fault.
- Re-centre at power-up Make sure the stick is straight and untouched when you switch the console on, because the N64 uses its start position as the reference.
- Unplug and replug Hold the stick where it does not drift, unplug the controller and plug it back in to reset the zero point.
- Use L+R+Start In games that support it, hold the stick in a good position and press L, R and Start together to re-zero.
- Open the controller If those fail, remove the seven screws on the back.
- Remove the stick assembly Take out the three screws holding it and unplug its cable from the board.
- Fit the new assembly Install the replacement in the same place and plug in its cable.
- Close and test Reassemble and test the full range of motion.
