Game Boy has sound in headphones but not the speaker

The headphone jack contains a switch that cuts the speaker when you plug in. If it sticks, the console thinks headphones are always connected.

Step by step

  1. Confirm the symptom Plug in headphones. If sound works there but not on the speaker, continue.
  2. Check the volume wheel Rotate it fully to rule out a dirty wheel.
  3. Open the console Remove the case screws and separate the halves.
  4. Test the speaker Measure its coil with a multimeter. Open means it is dead.
  5. Inspect the jack Check the jack's contact switch.
  6. Clean the contacts Clean them thoroughly and scrape gently to improve conductivity.
  7. Straighten the contact Gently bend it back into alignment.
  8. Test continuity Confirm the switch reads closed with no plug inserted.
  9. Replace the speaker only if dead Fit a new speaker if the coil is open.
  10. Reassemble and test Check the speaker volume.
