Repair guide

Fix a CD-ROM drive with a bad tray belt or a dirty laser lens

Slow, weak tray movement is usually a perished belt, and read errors are often a dirty lens or worn pickup. A belt swap and a careful lens clean fix many CD-based drives without touching the electronics.

Drive · Medium · about 60 minutes. Try it, but check first. This will not fix every machine, so read the sources first.

You are in the right place if: The tray will not open or close, the disc spins up and down, or the drive reads some discs but fails on others.

Before you start

  • Never look directly into a CD or DVD laser, and do not power the drive with the cover off if you can avoid it.
  • Do not touch the lens with fingers or abrasive cloths.
  • If the pickup is worn, a replacement may be required and is a job for experienced hands.

Step by step

  1. Try a known-good disc and a clean one Wipe a good disc with a soft cloth and test; rule out scratched or dirty media.
  2. Power off and remove the drive Disconnect power and data and take the drive out of the machine.
  3. Open the drive Remove screws and covers, and photograph the tray belt and gears.
  4. Inspect the belt Look for a stretched, cracked or slipping belt. A belt that has gone sticky should be replaced.
  5. Replace the belt Fit a belt of matching size, with the pulleys cleaned first.
  6. Clean the lens Wipe the lens very gently with a swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Do not touch the lens with fingers.
  7. Check the rails and spindle Look for dry grease on the sled rails and check the spindle clamp.
  8. Test the drive Power up and test tray movement and disc reading.
  9. Check capacitors if it still fails See the CD32 and CDTV recap notes for further steps.

  • Maybe (Low confidence). A drive that reads some discs but not others often just needs a lens clean before anything more drastic. General technique, no source.
