Repair guide
Check and adjust the head alignment on a Commodore 1541
A 1541 can drift out of alignment, so disks written elsewhere fail to read. Alignment is delicate; use the official service manual and an alignment aid, and be prepared to give up and seek help.

You are in the right place if: The drive reads its own disks but not those from other drives, or gives intermittent read errors that cleaning did not fix.
Before you start
- Alignment errors can make a working drive worse. Mark everything before changing anything.
- If you cannot get repeatable test results, stop and ask for help from an experienced Commodore drive repairer.
- Unplug the drive before opening it.

Step by step
- Clean and lubricate first Rule out dirt and dry grease with the floppy clean and lubricate guide before you touch alignment.
- Get the service manual Download the official 1541 service manual and read the alignment and adjustment sections in full.
- Gather an alignment aid You will need an alignment disk or test program recommended by the manual or community; do not guess adjustments without one.
- Mark the starting position Mark the position of the mounting screws and stepper with a dab of paint pen so you can return to where you started.
- Check head cleanliness and hub Clean the heads and confirm the hub and clamp are healthy.
- Run the test and note results Run the alignment program and note the readings before you change anything.
- Make a small adjustment Follow the manual to loosen the specified screw a fraction and nudge the part by a very small amount.
- Re-test and tighten Run the test again, adjust as required, then tighten and re-test.
- Cross-check with other disks Test with disks from a known-good drive and write and read between drives.
