Recap guide
Recap the Neo Geo Pocket
A kit exists for the Neo Geo Pocket Color and Slim, but we found no step-by-step guide or parts list, so treat this one as unverified.
Open the interactive checklist Tick off each capacitor as you replace it. It saves in your browser.
Check first. A recap is not always the answer here, so look at the guides before you order parts.
Which board do I have?
Boards changed during production. These notes come from the linked sources, and many are only partly documented, so check the board in front of you.
- Neo Geo Pocket (monochrome) (Low confidence). How to tell: Original black-and-white model. Capacitors: K-Retro's mono kit lists 4x 100 uF 4V and 1x 470 uF 6.3V. Capacitor list differs from other revisions: not known. Source
- Neo Geo Pocket Color 1998.12.18 (original) (Low confidence). How to tell: K-Retro identifies this version by the 1998.12.18 date on the board and compares it with the Slim by photo. Capacitors: K-Retro's kit lists 3x 100 uF 4V, 2x 220 uF 6.3V and 1x 47 uF 6.3V. Capacitor list differs from other revisions: yes. Source
- Neo Geo Pocket Color Slim 1999.08.31 (Low confidence). How to tell: K-Retro identifies the Slim by the 1999.08.31 board date. Capacitors: K-Retro's Slim kit lists values including 100 uF 4V, 220 uF 4V, 4.7 uF 25V, 10 uF 16V, 47 uF 6.3V and 100 uF 6.3V, a different set from the original NGPC kit. Capacitor list differs from other revisions: yes. Source
Where to start
We did not find a clear list of what fails first on this machine, so we are not guessing. Read the guides below, check the board for leaks, and replace what you can see.
Tips, tales and maybes
Found in write-ups and forum threads. These are other people's reports, not tested by us. Check part references and values against your own board.
- Tip: What a seller's NGPC kit contains (Low confidence). One seller lists its Neo Geo Pocket Color kit as 3x 100uF 4V, 2x 220uF 6.3V and 1x 47uF 6.3V, plus a LED, speaker and mini component map, and its monochrome kit as 4x 100uF 4V and 1x 470uF 6.3V. This is seller information, not a verified teardown. Source
- Tip: Seat the LED with the board in the case (Low confidence). The same seller advises inserting the LED into the PCB, placing the board in the front shell so the LED drops into its housing, and only then soldering it. It also says slightly higher voltage caps can be used if they fit. Source
- Watch out: Original cap is held tight (Low confidence). A seller of a Color and Slim cap set says the original capacitor is tightly attached to the motherboard and should be removed carefully to avoid damaging it. It is the only caution on that listing. Source

The capacitor list
We have not checked a capacitor list for this machine yet, so none is shown. Follow the guide above for your board, then add the capacitors in the interactive checklist and it builds a shopping list for you.

Steps, tools and safety
The steps, the tools in top, middle and budget picks, and the safety list are the same for every machine, so they live on one page: How to recap, step by step.
Values are shown as published in the guides above, and boards changed during production. Check the board in front of you. A recap involves hot tools and, on some machines, dangerous voltages. You do it at your own risk.
