Roland MPU-401 (1984)
The external MIDI interface box that defined the MPU-401 standard used by PC music software for decades.
Released as an external breakout box with MIDI in, out, thru, tape and sync connectors, wired to a PC through a separate interface card (MPU-IPC). Intelligent mode offered a built-in 8-track sequencer; the simpler UART mode became the de facto PC MIDI standard.
