Conner CP342 (1987)
The first IDE hard drive sold separately.
IDE began inside Compaq PCs in 1986, and Conner offered the CP342 as the first standalone IDE drive in June 1987. It put controller electronics on the drive, so motherboards needed only a simple connector. IDE standardised as ATA-1 in 1994.
